Thank you for tuning in to hear all about our gallivanting for the month of July. We have lots to share, including our first live discussion with some of the brightest minds working in travel innovation to discuss the changing face of in-flight entertainment and the timelines for the adoption of these advanced technologies.
Tourism is making the headlines for a lot of the wrong reasons this month with further backlash against mass tourism in Spain and major heatwaves hitting many of the most popular resorts in Southern Europe with Greece even issuing a red alert to tourists in the UK due to scorching weather. These destinations are not only some of the most beautiful places on earth but also core to the economic viability in the regions that heavily reply on tourism for income.
At the MTA we believe in the hybrid future of tourism and want to help carve out what that may look like. Perhaps there are new business models that can help to alleviate the pressures of tourism and also help mitigate against the changes that come with ongoing climate change? We are all ears for ideas. Let’s explore and create together.
We hosted our first Live discussion to explore the future of Travel & Technology and were delighted to share our thoughts with leaders from Lufthansa Innovation Hub, Luxury Travel Guide and the Travel Trends Podcast.

July 26th - MTA Travel and Technology Trends Discussion
The discussion derived from research that Lufthansa Innovation hub produced about The Metaverse in Aviation. For anybody interested the report is here. Below is an overview of travel use cases found in the research. I would love to hear any feedback that subscribers have about the various virtual tourism activities found here.
In other events, we have been mixing with the crypto crowds in Brussels at two of the largest European conferences for blockchain projects. Highlights were spending time hearing about the Network State from Balaji at EthCC Brussels and secondly talking all things aviation and blockchain at Polkadot Decoded with some projects that are already working quite closely with the sector. There are also some very interesting developments in the loyalty space.
Last month we began to look at 6 overall threats to the future of the tourism sector. From Mass tourism to political instability, these macro economic factors are sure to play a role in the sustainable development of travel products and services. This month we dove a little deeper into the first threat, Mass Tourism see here.
Another month and another vibrant conversation with a potential partner for the MTA. This time with the team for Virtualness. We spoke about loyalty, travel memories and the need for a greater understanding of the hardships felt by the tourism sector during the Covid Pandemic. This may be a global event that most people want to forget but it is important that we learn from history and plan for any future situation that would have such a drastic impact on the tourism industry overall.
